Match Report: VFL Round 5 v Brisbane Lions

Round 5 was back on the road for the Borough, against the Brisbane Lions at Moreton Bay Sports Complex on Sunday morning. Conditions were perfect for footy but with Moreton Bay’s signature wind favouring one end of the ground, Port Melbourne were out looking for a second win in a row.

It was a tough game for the Borough to take possession of from the start, with only one behind showing on the scoreboard before quarter time. This provided a chance to chase down the lead for the remainder of the game, however that proved to be a difficult task. Between the fifteenth and twenty third minute of the second quarter, Port Melbourne held a high possession of the ball, and it made an impact on the scoreboard. 5 scoring shots including a goal from Matt Signorello showed the determination of the Borough to fight until the end for the win. Going into the major break, Port Melbourne were trailing by 30 points.

The second half provided a chance for a sweeping comeback. Brisbane came out with a strong attack on the ball; however, the Borough were able to respond. 3 consecutive goals from Jackson Weidermann, Cody Szust and a second from Matt Signorello made it a 25-point ball game, putting the win within arm’s reach. Marcus Lentini had another strong impact on the game with 31 disposals and Cody Stackelberg bought the pressure, with 5 successful tackles.

Despite significantly trailing Brisbane, Port Melbourne didn’t drop their intensity in the last quarter. Goals from Jack Brisky and Archi Manton as well as working to rush behinds for Brisbane displayed the constant hard work and on ball pressure Port Melbourne bring week in, week out. A late goal from Brisbane left the Brough walking away with a 39-point loss before a bye next week, leaving room to train hard and prepare for the next block of the season.

Port Melbourne take on the Richmond tigers, home at ETU stadium on the 7th of May, looking for the second win of the season.
