Welcome to Port Melbourne Football Club

Saturday was a historic game for the girls. Playing their first ever VFLW game at their home ground. The weather could’ve been nicer us, but the girls were none the less excited for the game a head. Williamstown come rolling in with their game faces on, but it wasn’t stopping the Borough girls.

The first quarter started, and it was tough conditions to start off the game. The oval was slippery and wet and both sides defence was great. It wasn’t long into the first quarter when the girls show Williamstown what they are made of as Sarah McNamara kicks the first goal of the game. Not long after Sophie Locke comes through with her first goal of the game as well! With the first two goals and a couple behinds it left us with a comfortable 15 point lead and the Borough girls making sure that Williamstown didn’t score for the first quarter.

As the second quarter comes around the rain really starts to come down but 3 minutes in and Cleo Saxon-Jones kicks a bomb for the Borough girls. The ground becomes really slippery, and Williamstown come through with their first goal of the day, but Sarah McNamara shuts down Williamstown’s hope as she kicks her second goal of the day but why stop there? Holly Bailey come through straight after and kicks her first goal of the day. Coming to the end of the quarter Williamstown were able to kick another goal but not enough to stop our 23-point lead.

Third quarter rolls around and both teams are finding it hard to stand as the ground becomes almost too slippery to run on. Both teams come out this quarter fighting hard, the tackles are great, and the shepherding is just as good. 9 minutes in and Williamstown were able to break free and cut our lead down to 17 points. As the end of the quarter creeps around Sophie Locke comes out to kick her second goal of the day extending our lead but up to 26.

Fourth quarter comes around and the rain and the wind has picked up, but the girls are still in it for the long run. Williamstown starts to look tired, but the Borough girls are ready for the last quarter to be a good one. All the players were slipping on the ground but the tackles from both teams were still great. Both teams were playing kick to kick and no one from were teams managed to kick a goal or even a behind. This left the final scores to be the same as third quarter; Boroughs 6.9.45 win against Williamstown 3.1.19.

What a game that was! Watching the Borough girls win their first VFLW game on their home ground and in tough conditions was amazing. This game, along with their first ever VFLW game, will go down in history. Congratulation to the Borough girls and Lachie Harris for a great game, you should all be very proud of yourself. 3 for 3!!!
